A "Renaissance" chateau made entirely of bricks, where one of Henri III's court favourites - a finance minister in exile - lived, and above all, an aviation pioneer: Hubert Latham landed here in August 1910. Maillebois is part of the history of France.
Despite records of defences being present on the site as early as 1383, construction of the brick-built château we see today by Jean d'O, with its six towers and chapel, dates back to around 1460. His descendent François d'O was one of the favourites of Henri III and held several highly-paid honorary positions: Governor of Caen, Governor of Paris, Superintendent of Finances. As a lover of art, sculpture and painting, he "much embellished the residences he occupied in each position". Guided visit of the château and site (17th-century outbuildings constructed by J.B. Desmarets, 19th-century stables built by L.H. Latham in around 1880).
