Sports & Active adventures
Connecting with nature through sports is a precious part of life in Eure et Loir. Pedaling, walking, paddling, embracing the outdoors… Grab your best mate, your nearest and dearest, and catch the feel-good bug called serotonin together. Nature and sports will give you this brain chemical without demanding anything in return. Oh wait a minute! You might have to pay your round of drinks after the session!
Two-wheeled adventures!
Whether you've just got yourself a new bike or are a hardened cyclist, the thrill of discovering Eure et Loir on two wheels is tough to beat. And guess what? There’s no need to be ahead of the pack when cycling on the Veloscenic section crossing our county. The Veloscenic is a well-signposted 450 km route from Paris via Chartres, the Perche and Normandy right up to the Mont St-Michel. A wonderful opportunity to combine the joys of cycling at your own pace with the discovery of the local culture, heritage and history.
On your bike, get set...go! Hit the Veloscenic and you’ll soon come across well-known landmarks such as the Château de Maintenon, Chartres Cathedral, the Royal Military College of Thiron Gardais and the hilly landscapes of the Perche as well as a host of hidden gems.
If you lose the track of this route, you can always switch to another cycling itinerary referred to as “Loir Valley on a bike” (la Vallée du Loir à vélo) which runs from the sources of the river Loir in Saint Eman to Angers.
Follow the course of the river Loir, and ride on! Depart near Illiers Combray, cycle along the river banks through picturesque villages and bucolic landscapes. Discover Bonneval, Châteaudun and its castle and finally Cloyes. Pack the perfect food and drinks for a fun (or romantic) picnic ride!
Saddle up on your modern-day pilgrims' mules – aka, your bike – and take a backroad cycling tour along the famous Saint Jacques de Compostelle route. For centuries, the historically important routes of Saint James have been used by pilgrims, hikers and now cyclists on their way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
This entirely signposted long-distance itinerary includes a small 123 km section in Eure et Loir - notably crossing the Eure Valley followed by the Loir Valley. As you can imagine, it's not a trip for the faint-hearted but you can expect quiet, traffic-free lanes whizzing through ancient landscapes of river valleys and sprawling hills.
Walk this Way!
Looking to explore the county on foot? There's nothing quite like lacing up your hiking boots and heading into the great outdoors of Eure et Loir! The walking routes in Eure et Loir are distinctively marked, largely off-road and traffic free. If you’ve never hiked before, don’t let that deter you. One of the best things about hiking is there’s no experience required to get started. All you need is some time, a sense of adventure and a little bit of preparation.
